SK Chairman Chey Tae-won Congratulates T1 on Historic Fifth LoL World Championship Victory

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently celebrated T1, the South Korean esports team, for their impressive victory in the League of Legends (LoL) World Championship, marking their fifth title win. Chey expressed his admiration for the team, saying, “Your passion and teamwork have inspired and filled fans worldwide, myself included, with immense pride. This victory is especially meaningful as it was achieved through mutual trust and dedication in challenging moments. I hope this win becomes a stepping stone for greater achievements and a new era for Korean esports.”

On November 2, T1 clinched their latest championship at London’s O2 Arena, edging out China’s Bilibili Gaming with a tight 3-2 scoreline in the finals. This victory not only awarded them the “Summoner’s Cup” but also came at a symbolic time, as T1 celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Founded in 2004 with the aim of connecting with younger generations, T1 quickly became a major force in global esports. When LoL gained worldwide popularity in 2012, T1 established a new team that soon rose to prominence, led by the legendary player Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, who guided T1 to their first World Championship in 2013.

SK Telecom has been a critical supporter of T1 and the development of esports in South Korea. The company launched the nation’s first junior player program to nurture emerging talent, leading to the rise of current stars like Choi “Zeus” Woo-je, Moon “Oner” Hyeon-joon, and Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyung—all of whom started in the T1 Rookies program.

In addition to supporting T1, SK Telecom has contributed significantly to the broader esports ecosystem, chairing the Korea e-Sports Association and hosting key events from 2005 to 2013. T1 reached a new milestone in 2019 by partnering with Comcast, a global media giant, to expand into an international esports powerhouse. In 2021, following SK Telecom’s restructuring, T1 became part of SK Square’s portfolio.

To elevate T1’s value, SK Square and Comcast invested 13.5 billion KRW in 2022. Leveraging Comcast’s media expertise and sports management experience—including NHL and NBA teams—T1 experienced an impressive 38% annual revenue growth, reaching 34.6 billion KRW in revenue in 2022, a 45% increase from the previous year.

SK Square and Comcast are now exploring further growth and innovation to establish T1 as a premier global esports entity. As esports and gaming communities grow, fans are increasingly seeking safe sports betting options, making platforms that analyze and verify sites, like 토토 먹튀검증업체, essential for finding secure betting sites.
